The History of Wesleyan Field Hockey

The Wesleyan Field Hockey Program Today
Since its founding in 1974, the Wesleyan field hockey program has been one of the top programs in the country. The team has won 17 conference championships and made 11 NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the Final Four in 2002. The program has produced 12 All-Americans and three Olympians, and it is currently ranked sixth in the nation by the National field hockey Coaches Association.
Under Head Coach Amy Boles, the team has continued its tradition of excellence. In her seven seasons at Wesleyan, Boles has led the Cardinals to five conference titles and four NCAA tournament appearances. In 2016, Wesleyan won its first ever NCAA tournament game, defeating Trinity 2-1 in overtime. The team’s run came to an end in the second round, however, as they fell to eventual National Champion Middlebury 1-0.
The 2017 season was another successful one for Wesleyan, as they once again won the Conference Championship and made it back to the NCAA Tournament The team’s postseason run was cut short by Middlebury, however, as they fell 2-1 in double overtime in the second round.
The 2018 season saw Wesleyan return to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year. The team lost to eventual national champion Middlebury 2-0 in the first round.
The 2019 season was yet another successful one for Wesleyan, as they won their sixth conference championship and made their fifth straight NCAA tournament appearance. The team’s season came to an end with a 2-1 loss to Middlebury in the first round of the NCAA Tournament

The Wesleyan University Field Hockey team is coming off of a historic 2019 season in which the Cardinals won their first-ever NCAA Division III National Championship Despite losing a number of key seniors to graduation, the team is poised to stay atop the College Field Hockey world for years to come.
The core of the team’s success is its combination of top-tier coaching and exceptional talent. head coach Christine Hardy has been at the helm of the program since 2013 and has guided the team to new heights, culminating in last year’s national title. Hardy’s assistant coaches are also highly experienced and dedicated to helping the team succeed.
In terms of talent, Wesleyan have a number of young players who are already making an impact at the collegiate level. Sophomore midfielder India Pascale was named 2019 National Rookie of the Year, while junior defender Jess Williamson was named First Team All-American. Under Mitchell’s tutelage, Wesleyan won 13 conference championships, made 14 NCAA Tournament appearances and reached the Final Four three times.
The Wesleyan Field Hockey program has also produced a number of Individual national award winners. In 2009, Audrey Bartels ’10 became just the second player in NCAA Division III history to win the Honda Sports Award for Field Hockey given to the nation’s best player. Bartels was also named the NFHCA National Player of the Year, becoming just the third player in Wesleyan history to receive that honor.
