A brief history of the University of Wisconsin-Madison men’s hockey team

The University of Wisconsin-Madison men’s Hockey Team is a NCAA Division I college Ice Hockey program that competes in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). The Badgers have won two NCAA national championships, in 1973 and 1990. They are also seventeen-time conference champions.

It would be another seven years before they made it back to the Final Four, but when they did they made it count. In 1990, led by future NHL stars Chris Chelios and Tony Amonte, Wisconsin won their second NCAA National Championship with a 6-5 victory over Colgate in triple overtime.

Since then, the Badgers have been one of college hockey’s most successful programs. They’ve made it back to the NCAA Tournament twenty-nine times and have reached the Frozen Four eleven times since 1990. They’ve also won eight WCHA championships since joining the conference in 1951. In 2018, they finally captured their first National Championship since 1990 by defeating Ohio State 3-0 in St Paul Minnesota
