Hardin Simmons Women’s Basketball Team strives for success

The Hardin Simmons University women’s Basketball team has been working hard in preparation for their upcoming season The team is composed of student athletes who are committed to achieving success both on and off the court.

The team’s Head Coach Julie Goodenough, has led the team to three consecutive American Southwest conference championships and four NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. Coach Goodenough stressed the importance of building a strong foundation in the off-season so that the team can be prepared to compete at a high level during the regular season

The players have been working hard to improve their individual skillsets as well as learning to play as a cohesive unit. The team’s captain, senior guard Katie webb, believes that the key to success is “being unselfish and playing for each other”.

The Team’s History

TheHardin-Simmons women’s Basketball team represents Hardin–Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. The team currently competes in the American West Conference of NCAA Division III HSU has an all-time record of 1,014–643 (.613), 3 NCAA Division II Tournament appearances, and 6 conference championships.

The team has been coached by Cayla Petree since 2018. Coach Petree is the only coach in the program’s history to have led the Cowgirls to an NCAA tournament appearance. In her first season leading the Cowgirls, she led them to a 21–4 overall record and a 14–2 conference record. The Cowgirls finished the season ranked No. 23 in the nation by the Woman’s Basketball Coaches Association and won their first ASC championship since 2011.

The Team’s Current Roster

The Hardin Simmons women’s basketball team is currently composed of 15 players. The team is coached by Matt Sierra and they play their home games at the Mabee Complex. Some of the standout players on the team include:

The Lady Eagles and the Lady War Hawks have had some recent success against each other, with the Eagles winning four of the last six meetings. The two teams will meet again on January 3rd in a key conference matchup.

The Hardin Simmons University Cowgirls ended their 2017-2018 season with an impressive overall record of 21-8. They placed second in the American West Conference with a conference record of 13-5. The Cowgirls also made it to the ASC semi-finals before losing to the University of Texas at Dallas. Even though the Cowgirls did not take home the ASC title, they had a very successful season and are looking forward to next year.
