Almida worked long hours as a factory worker to support Diaz and his two sisters. Growing up, Diaz idolized Kobe Bryant and dreamed of one day Playing in the NBA.
Diaz began playing organized basketball at the age of 12. He played for his local youth team and quickly began to stand out as a talented player. He played his first two years of high school basketball in the United States before returning to his home country. Diaz originally committed to play for DePaul University, but after Head Coach Dave Leitao was fired, he decided to attend the University of Miami instead. As a freshman, Diaz averaged 12.5 points and 3.5 assists per game and was named to the Second Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Diaz had a breakout sophomore season, averaging 17.6 points and 4.4 assists per game and being named First Team All-ACC. He also helped lead the Miami Hurricanes to their first NCAA tournament berth in six years.
