The best college hockey rivalries
There are few things more exciting in college sports than a good old-fashioned rivalry.
And college hockey is no different. There are a number of great rivalries in the sport, some of which date back decades. Here are just a few of the best:
Boston College vs. Notre Dame
This rivalry dates back to the early days of college hockey with the first game between these two teams taking place in 1918. The schools are separated by just over 200 miles, and they have been two of the top programs in the sport for many years. The teams have met nearly 350 times, with Notre Dame holding a slim lead in the all-time series (174-173-10). They have also met 11 times in the NCAA tournament with Boston College winning eight of those meetings.
Minnesota vs. Wisconsin:
These two border rivals have been playing each other since 1930 and they have met nearly 300 times since then. Minnesota has had the upper hand for much of the series, but Wisconsin has won four of the last five meetings (including two victories in the NCAA tournament). The schools are also heated rivals in other sports, most notably men’s basketball and football.
Michigan vs. Michigan State
These two Big Ten rivals are located just over 60 miles apart from each other, and they have been playing each other since 1922. Michigan has had a lot more success than Michigan State over the years (the Wolverines own a 119-74-17 all-time lead), but the Spartans have won four straight games against their archrival. These teams also meet regularly in other sports, most notably football and basketball.

2. University of Minnesota
3. University of North Dakota
4. Boston College
5. University of Michigan
The most underrated College hockey teams
The Mavericks are off to a great start this season and are currently ranked No. 15 in the country. They have a talented group of forwards led by sophomore Austin Ortega, who has already racked up eight goals and six assists in just eight games. If they can keep up this level of play, they could be a dangerous team come tournament time.
2. Boston University
The Terriers are always a tough team to play against and this year is no different. They have yet to lose in regulation and their only loss came against then-No. 1 Quinnipiac. They have a well-balanced lineup with contributions coming from up and down the roster. Look for them to be near the top of the standings all season long
3. Notre Dame
The Fighting Irish are another team that has been flying under the radar so far this season. They have one of the best goalies in the country in Cal Petersen, who has already posted five shutouts in just eight games played If they can continue to get strong goaltending, they will be tough to beat.
The most overrated College Hockey teams
The Hockey East is home to some of the most overrated college hockey teams in the country. These teams are often lauded for their wins, but their losses are just as numerous. Here are the most overrated teams in the Hockey East
1. University of Massachusetts Amherst
The Minutemen are consistently one of the best teams in the Hockey East but they have yet to win a National Championship They have made it to the Frozen Four four times, but they have never won it all.
2. University of New Hampshire
The Wildcats are another team that is always near the top of the Hockey East standings but they have never won a National Championship They have been to the Frozen Four five times, but they have never won it all.
3. University of Maine
The Black Bears are another team that has been near the top of the Hockey East standings for years, but they have never won a National Championship They have been to the Frozen Four six times, but they have never won it all.
The future of college hockey
The defending National Champion Minnesota Golden Gophers are off to a hot start, sitting atop the standings with a 6-1 record. They’re followed closely by the Boston College Eagles, who are 5-1-1 on the season.
So who’s on top in college hockey? It’s still early in the season, but it looks like it could be anyone’s game.
