Most recently, Johnson played for BC Kalev/Cramo in Estonia where he was one of the Top Players in the Estonian-Latvian Basketball League (BLKL).

He then moved on to become an assistant coach at the University of Kentucky where he won a National Championship in 1996. In 1997, Johnson became the Head Coach at Vanderbilt University During his tenure as head coach at Vanderbilt, Johnson led the team to four NCAA Tournament appearances.
In 2007, Johnson left Vanderbilt to become the Head Coach of the University of Cincinnati In his first season as Head coach at Cincinnati, Johnson led the team to their first ever NCAA tournament appearance. In 2010, Johnson was named Conference USA Coach of the Year after leading Cincinnati to a share of the Conference USA regular season championship.
Johnson has coached many successful basketball players throughout his career, including All-Americans Joe Harrell and Dan Langhi.
