The Rules of Basketball
Basketball is a sport played by two teams of five players on a rectangular court. The objective of the game is to score points by shooting a ball through a hoop (the basket) mounted high on a backboard at each end of the court. The game is played by passes between players, and dribbling (bouncing the ball while running). A player scores a goal when they shoot the ball through the hoop, and the opposing team scores when they stop the shooting team from shooting, or when they stop them from dribbling the ball (a turnover). The winner is the team with more points at the end of the game.
Basketball is governed by several rules, which are designed to make the game fair and entertaining. The main rules are:
-Each team must have five players on the court at all times.
-A player must be in control of the ball when dribbling; if they lose control of it, it’s a turnover.
-A player can only take three steps with the ball before they must either dribble or pass it to another player.
-A player cannot double-dribble (stop and start dribbling again), or they will turn over possession of the ball.
-A goal is only scored if the shooting player’s feet are behind the three point line or if they shoot from within the paint (the area near the basket). If they shoot from outside of the three point line, it’s worth three points; if they shoot from inside of it, it’s worth two points.
-After a goal is scored, play resumes with a jump ball at midfield; both teams send one player to jump for possession of the ball.
