Winston is joined by fellow seniors Joshua Langford and Nick Ward to form a formidable core that has been together for four years.
The Spartans also have an excellent group of young players led by freshman forward Xavier Tillman. Tillman has already shown flashes of greatness and will only get better as the season goes on. The Spartans also have good depth, with players like Conner George and Kenny Goins providing quality minutes off the bench.
The Spartans non-Conference Schedule is highlighted by a game against Louisville on November 27th. The Spartans will also play in the Maui Invitational, where they could potentially face Duke in the semifinals.

The Michigan State Spartans men’s Basketball team represents Michigan State University (MSU) in NCAA Division I college basketball competition. Tom Izzo is in his 23rd season as the Head Coach of the Spartans, who are members of the Big Ten Conference. After leading the Spartans to their first Final Four in 20 years, Izzo was named Naismith College Coach of the Year for the second time.
The Spartans have won two NCAA Championships and 15 Big Ten Conference championships. Their two National Championships came in 1979 and 2000. The 79 title came after defeating Indiana State in the Championship game which is notable for being one of only two times that a team from outside the state of Indiana (1979 and 2012) has won the NCAA tournament The Spartans also lost in the 1919 Final Four and 1950 National Championship Game, both times against Kentucky. MSU also appeared in back-to-back Final Fours in 2005 and 2006, losing to Louisville and Florida, respectively.

Incoming freshman Jaren Jackson Jr. and transfer Shayne Whittington are expected to make significant contributions this season. Jackson was rated as a five-star recruit by ESPN and was ranked as the No. 4 player in the class of 2017. He chose MSU over offers from Arizona, Purdue, Texas Tech and USC. Whittington is a graduate transfer from Western Michigan who will be eligible to play immediately. He averaged 10.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game last season while shooting 53 percent from the field.

Following a 15-17 season in which the Spartans finished 9th in the Big Ten expectations will not be as high for this Spartan team. Some of last year’s key contributors, including Miles Bridges, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Josh Langford, have all departed for the NBA. With that being said, Coach Izzo always has his teams ready to play and expectations are still high within the program.
The Spartan’s non-conference schedule is highlighted by games against Kansas (November 6th), Louisville (November 27th), and at UNC (December 4th). Within the conference, Michigan State will look to improve upon last year’s record with key games against rivals Michigan (February 24th), Ohio State (February 10th), and Purdue (January 27th).
