The 1996-97 Fleer Metal basketball set was released in late 1996 and contains 100 cards. The first 40 cards in the set feature Veterans while the last 60 cards spotlight Rookies. Cards #1-#40 are printed on white stock while cards #41-#100 are printed on metalized paper stock. The front of each card has a large color portrait with a gold metallic frame. The player’s name, team and position are printed at the bottom of the picture in a smaller font. The back of the card has a metalized player head shot along with biographical information and vitals. A “Fleer Wing” graphic is printed to the right of the picture. At the bottom of the card, there is a section called “Fleer Watch” which gives Fleer’s opinion of that particular player as well as highlight some key points in their career up to that point.
The metal cards are very susceptible to chipping and denting, especially around the edges, so it is recommended that you handle them carefully. You can find singles from this set for around $2-$5 each, although some of the more popular players can go for somewhat more. A Complete Set will cost you between $200-$300 depending on condition. Boxes of 36 packs originally sold for around $60 per box when they were first released.
If you are looking to add this classic Fleer set to your collection, you can find singles and sets for sale at most online sports card shops. Be sure to check out our own checklist below which includes all 100 cards in the set as well as prices for singles and sets in both NM/MT and Ex/Mt condition!
