They finished the season 262 and 160 in conference to win the Big West’s regular season championship. They went on to win both the conference tournament and NCAA West Regional to advance to the Final Four for the second time in school history. In the national semifinal, they defeated Duke 7977 in a game later known as “The Greatest Game Ever Played”, which is widely considered one of college basketball’s most exciting games In the National Championship game, they were upset by the underdog North Carolina Tar Heels 7978, despite being heavy favorites.

It was also UNLV’s sixth consecutive 30-win season and ninth consecutive 20-win season. The team became only the second team in NCAA Division I history at that time to win 35 games in a season (Indiana did it first during their undefeated 197576 campaign).
