Indians don’t extend any Qualifying Offers
The Cleveland Indians decided not to extend any qualifying offers to Mike Napoli, Rajai Davis and Coco Crisp. This means they are all now unrestricted free agents. Had the Indians extended qualifying offers to them and they declined, the Indians would have received draft pick compensation if they were sign with another team.
Obviously the Indians can still sign these players and there seems to be mutual interest between Napoli and the Indians.
BBWAA Award Finalists
Three members of the 2016 Cleveland Indians are finalists for BBWAA Awards including Corey Kluber (AL Cy Young), Tyler Naquin (AL Rookie of the Year) and Terry Francona (AL Manager of the Year).
Joining Francona as finalists for AL Manager of the Year is Jeff Banister of the Texas Rangers and Buck Showalter of the Baltimore Orioles. The Rangers had the best record in the American League this year while the Orioles were eliminated in the Wild Card Game by the Toronto Blue Jays.
He may have only been around for part of the season but New York Yankees C Gary Sanchez tore the cover off of the ball hitting .299/20HR/42RBI in just 53 games. Sanchez and Naquin are also joined by Michael Fulmer of the Detroit Tigers who finished the season with an 11-7 record in 26 starts and a 3.07 ERA.
There is no surprise that Corey Kluber is in the running for the American League Cy Young Award again. He is joined by Rick Porcello of the Boston Red Sox and Justin Verlander of the Tigers. The three candidates break down this way:
- Rick Porcello – 22-7 (1st), 3.15 ERA (5th), 189 K (8th), 5.0 WAR (T-5)
- Corey Kluber – 18-9 (3rd), 3.14 ERA (4th), 227 K (5th), 6.5 WAR (2nd)
- Justin Verlander – 16-9 (T-6), 3.04 ERA (2nd), 254 K (1st), 6.6 WAR (1st)
The Indians also activated Carlos Carrasco and Michael Brantley from the 60-Day DL and outrighted C Adam Moore to AAA Columbus.
