The Browns defensive last year was usually good but they had real issues stopping the run. Ahtyba Rubin left for Seattle opening up a huge hole in our line. As of now I project our defensive line to be Desmond Bryant at one end, Randy Starks at the other and Phil Taylor at nose tackle. Plus the Browns have John Hughes and Billy Winn as backups. This lack of talent is evident and it doesn’t help that Starks and Bryant are past their prime and Taylor is very injury prone. Another versatile lineman would be really great to bolster this unproven unit.

Malcolm Brown is very different prospect from Danny Shelton who I wrote a scouting report on last week. While Danny Shelton is a large space eating nose tackle, Malcolm Brown is more of a penetrating 4-3 defensive tackle who will likely be a defensive end in the Brown’s 3-4 technique. He is very quick off the snap, especially considering 6-foot-2 320 pound frame. His uses his size and quickness to disrupt running lanes and stuff the running back for a loss. Could use more strength for the next level. Brown is decent as a pass rusher, but doesn’t seem like a threat to get 8+ sacks.  He has lots of room to grow athletically and has upside. Has a great motor, make hustle plays away from the hashes. Excellent intangibles and maturity evidenced by having a wife and two kids, and volunteering for Adam’s Angels which helps families whose children have cancer. Usually gets compared to other quick big guys like Arthur Jones and Sylvester Williams.

Malcolm Brown is being mocked to the Browns in a lot of mock drafts, some have them reaching for him at 12 where it is almost guaranteed that he will be there, and others having them taking Brown at 19 . Malcolm Brown fills a huge need for the Browns wherever they pick him. On Walter Football’s consensus mock draft 12% of mock drafts in his database have the Browns taking Browns at the 12th pick and an 11% chance of them taking Brown at 19. With the Browns addressing their need at wide receiver in free agency by signing Dwayne Bowe and Brian Hartline it feels more likely that they will address other needs like their defensive line in the draft.
